AWARENESS AND ACTION

Preventing Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a serious issue in Canada, affecting thousands each year. Victims often face sexual exploitation and forced labor, with a significant number being women and children.

Understanding Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a serious crime that involves the exploitation of individuals through coercion, force, or deception. In the Cochrane District, as elsewhere, it can manifest in various forms, including:

Sex Trafficking: Individuals are forced or manipulated into engaging in commercial sex acts against their will.

Labor Trafficking: Victims are coerced into working under severe conditions, often in violation of labor laws, without proper compensation or freedom.
Understanding these different forms of trafficking helps to shed light on the complex nature of this crime and the diverse ways in which individuals can be exploited. Addressing human trafficking in all its forms is essential for effectively combating this issue and supporting those affected.

Signs And Indicators

Recognizing the signs of human trafficking is crucial for intervention and prevention. Look for the following indicators:
Behavioural Changes: Victims may show sudden changes in behavior, such as withdrawal, fearfulness, or anxiety.

Physical Signs of Abuse: Look for signs of physical abuse, such as unexplained injuries, malnutrition, or poor hygiene.

Control and Coercion: Victims might be controlled by someone else, showing signs of restricted freedom, lack of personal identification documents, or being accompanied by someone who speaks for them or controls their movements.
Being aware of these signs can help in identifying and supporting potential victims, and in contributing to efforts to combat trafficking in our community.

Know The Sign

This is the universal hand signal for individuals seeking help in dangerous situations. Learn to recognize and use it to support those at risk, raise awareness, and play a role in preventing human trafficking. Know It, Use It, See It.

Tuck Thumb

The “Tuck Thumb” hand signal is a discreet gesture used to signal for help. Simply tuck your thumb into your palm while holding your hand up. This simple motion can alert others to potential danger.

Trap Thumb

The “Trap Thumb” hand signal involves tucking your thumb into your palm and then closing your fingers over it, symbolizing being trapped. This motion is recognized as a silent cry for help.

What The Hand Signal Is

The human trafficking hand signal, known as the Signal for Help, is a discreet gesture victims can use to indicate they are in danger. It gained recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic, when lockdowns made seeking help much harder. Launched by the Canadian Women’s Foundation in 2020, the signal allows people to communicate distress without alerting their abusers. Shared on social media, it has raised awareness for those who may not have other ways to ask for help. Overall, the signal is a vital tool for both public awareness and personal safety.

When To Use The Hand Signal

The hand signal is intended to be used discreetly when someone is in a dangerous situation and needs help but cannot openly ask for it. It can be used during video calls, in public, or any situation where the person must communicate their need for help without drawing attention from their abuser. It relies on someone witnessing the gesture to recognize it and take appropriate action, such as calling the police or a helpline. Responders are encouraged to be cautious and ensure that the victim is not put in further danger by any intervention.

Impact and Spread

The hand signal gained global attention after being used in real-life situations. In 2021, a teenager in the U.S. used the gesture to alert authorities, leading to her rescue. This case helped raise awareness about the signal, which has since been included in various safety campaigns. It has spread to many countries and has become an important tool in fighting human trafficking and domestic violence globally. The signal continues to be promoted through social media, schools, and public safety programs, helping more people recognize and use it effectively.

“We may choose to look the other way, but we can never say again that we did not know.”
